Greg Dority has his sights on the lieutenant governor’s office, where he intends to “demagnetize the attraction” he says the state has for illegal immigrants. The Republican from Washington, N.C., has made two runs for Congress, losing to Frank Ballance in 2002 and to current U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield in 2004. But he says he’s learned to listen since then and has heard voters’ frustrations about illegal immigration. “There’s true anger there,” he said Tuesday. He was campaigning in Craven and Onslow counties during the day. “Illegal immigration is affecting our society because it puts pressure on our structures, even … the wage structure,” Dority said. “People already feel like they have less and less money left over. … They feel they’re being nickel-and-dimed from the top with taxes and fees and then squeezed from the bottom … when an illegal immigrant takes a job from a North Carolina resident,” he said. North Carolina must be in a “race to the bottom” with its neighboring states when it comes to attracting illegal immigrants, he said. “North Carolina is more of a magnet for illegal immigrants than Georgia, Tennessee or Virginia because of the ease of gaining a driver’s license here and the availability of social services,” he said. “We have to get tougher on those two things to demagnetize the attraction and to reduce the incentive for illegal immigrants to come here.” (Nikie Mayo, Sun Journal)

On Monday, Bill Graham filed papers with the North Carolina State Board of Elections officially declaring his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Governor. Bill gained notoriety for his successful crusade against North Carolina’s high gas tax. Some House Democrats are having behind-the-scenes discussions about creating a special visa for illegal aliens they believe will enjoy considerable Republican support. Under the plan, illegal aliens who can prove they have jobs, pay a fine, and pass a criminal background check will receive the gift of legal status for 5 years. The plan is designed to attract pro-business Republicans and those who backed the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill by also increasing the number of visas issued for technical, temporary and agricultural workers. Their plan appears to be to create a bi-partisan alternative to the bi-partisan SAVE Act (Secure America with Verification Enforcement), which focuses on reducing illegal immigration instead of rewarding it. Even longtime Clinton ally James Carville is acknowledging that Hillary is in trouble, saying that if she loses the March 4 primary in either Texas or Ohio, her campaign is doomed. Speaking at the International Builders Show in Florida on Wednesday, Carville — a top adviser to Bill Clinton in the 1990s — declared: “She’s behind. Make no mistake. There are several theories about the origin of Valentine's Day celebrations. Some believe the Romans had a mid-February custom where boys drew girls' names in honor of the sex and fertility goddess, Februata Juno; pastors "baptised" this holiday, like some others, by substituting the names of saints such as Valentine to suppress the practice. Others maintain that the custom of sending Valentines on 14 February stems from the belief that birds begin to pair on that date. By 1477 the English associated lovers with the feast of Valentine because on that day "every bird chooses him a mate." The custom started of men and women writing love letters to their Valentine on this day. Other "romance" traditions have become attached to this feast, including pinning bay leaves to your pillow on Valentine's Eve so that you will see your future mate that night in your dreams.
