Monday, April 14, 2008 9:37 PM By: Jim Meyers - Newsmax.com - Contrary to some claims that the Bush administration will allow diplomacy to handle Iran’s nuclear weapons program, a leading member of America’s Jewish community tells Newsmax that a military strike is not only on the table – but likely.

“Israel is preparing for heavy casualties,” the source said, suggesting that although Israel will not take part in the strike, it is expecting to be the target of Iranian retribution.

Candidate for lieutenant governor says state should stop being magnet for illegal immigrants (Nikie Mayo, Sun Journal)

Greg Dority has his sights on the lieutenant governor’s office, where he intends to “demagnetize the attraction” he says the state has for illegal immigrants.

The Republican from Washington, N.C., has made two runs for Congress, losing to Frank Ballance in 2002 and to current U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield in 2004. But he says he’s learned to listen since then and has heard voters’ frustrations about illegal immigration.

“There’s true anger there,” he said Tuesday. He was campaigning in Craven and Onslow counties during the day.

“Illegal immigration is affecting our society because it puts pressure on our structures, even … the wage structure,” Dority said.

“People already feel like they have less and less money left over. … They feel they’re being nickel-and-dimed from the top with taxes and fees and then squeezed from the bottom … when an illegal immigrant takes a job from a North Carolina resident,” he said.

North Carolina must be in a “race to the bottom” with its neighboring states when it comes to attracting illegal immigrants, he said.

“North Carolina is more of a magnet for illegal immigrants than Georgia, Tennessee or Virginia because of the ease of gaining a driver’s license here and the availability of social services,” he said. “We have to get tougher on those two things to demagnetize the attraction and to reduce the incentive for illegal immigrants to come here.” (Nikie Mayo, Sun Journal)

I am outraged by the actions of the Berkeley City Council. The U.S. Marines are a crucial part of our Armed Forces which young men and women join to serve their nation and defend their county. They deserve our support and sincere gratitude when they do. Many have sacrificed dearly for the freedoms that leaders in Berkeley take for granted. I support efforts in Congress like the Semper Fi act that pull back funding for projects in Berkeley. If Berkeley is hostile to our nation’s defenders, it doesn’t need our tax money either. (townhall.com)

Hillary's Wins Raise Prospect of the Unthinkable -- A Contested Convention (Bob Novak, humanevents.com)

A group of prominent Democrats was being formed secretly to go to Clinton to ask her to bow out for the sake of party solidarity. Now, neither candidate, counting their current super-delegates and potential unpledged delegates, can win a majority of delegates even after the Pennsylvania primary April 22. It is hard to imagine either bowing out. That raises the possibility of carnage in Denver with the super-delegates and the disputed Michigan and Florida delegations in play.

T. Keung Hui and Sam LaGrone, Staff Writers
RALEIGH - An extra $35 million may be considered a "no-frills" budget request by Wake County school leaders, but the county commissioners who are being asked to ante up warn that it's too much to ask from taxpayers. "This would appear to be a budget that would take all of our revenue growth and leave no other funds for any other county services" said Joe Bryan, chairman of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. "I don't think we could grow the county services and taxes by 12 percent." (N & O)

Dole, a Salisbury Republican, has been increasingly vocal about enforcement measures in the past year, and she played a key role in blocking last year's attempted comprehensive immigration reform in Congress. (News & Observer)

New! Obama Under Fire for Terri Schiavo Remark (terrisfight.org)

February 29, 2008 (Christian Post)

Pro-life groups are condemning Democratic presidential frontrunner Barack Obama for saying that his biggest regret in his political career was supporting the right of the parents of brain-damaged Terri Schiavo to appeal in a federal court to keep her alive by sustaining her feeding tube.

The comment came during a debate Tuesday night when MSNBC moderator Tim Russert asked Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton whether there was “any word or vote that you’d like to take back” in your “careers in public service.” Clinton had responded that she regretted her vote authorizing the war in Iraq, while Obama wanted to take back his 2005 vote regarding the Terry Schiavo case.

Terrorists Still Have the Advantage: America, by the inaction of the U.S. House of Representatives, has been weakened substantially in fighting terrorism. As I reported last week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) and her left-wing allies decided to leave Washington without voting on the bipartisan Senate bill that would have extended key provisions of the Protect America Act, a bill that is essential for America's ability to quickly and deftly track terrorist communications overseas. This abdication of responsibility by such a high-ranking member of our government has been the most amazing anti-national security action by Congress in decades. (HumanEvents.com)

Bill gained notoriety for his successful crusade against North Carolina’s high gas tax.
The announcement was made one week after officials with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that more than 52,000 U.S. employers now use the E-Verify program to electronically verify a new worker's employment eligibility. The number is twice the number of employers who used it in 2006.

The Alert:
The Congressional Earmarking system is corrupt. Earmarks allow Congressmen to direct billions of our tax dollars to pet projects and preferred supporters, companies or organizations -- all without public debate or even a vote in Congress. In 2007 -- despite a weak legislative effort -- Congress funded thousands of earmarks to the tune of $13.2 billion. And now Congress is at it again with a new round of Earmarks for 2008.

Huckabee: Fertilized Egg Is Person - Amendment in Colorado (Newsmax.com)

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee has endorsed an amendment to Colorado’s constitution declaring that a fertilized egg is a person.

“This proposed constitutional amendment will define a person as a human being from the moment life begins at conception,” Huckabee said in a statement backing the Colorado Human Life Amendment.

“With this amendment, Colorado has an opportunity to send a clear message that every human life has value.

Playing Politics With National Security - Terrorists Still Have the Advantage

A message from Newt:

America, by the inaction of the U.S.

Grassfire to Congress: Build the Fence as Promised!

In a backroom deal just prior to the Christmas break, Congress passed the omnibus Appropriations bill which included the Hutchison Amendment that gutted the Secure Fence Act. Her amendment essentially guaranteed that the DHS didn't have to build the fence! After Grassfire broke the "Secure Fence Hoax", key members of Congress took action in an effort to "undo" what the Hutchison amendment did, by restoring deadlines and double fence mandate for the entire 854 miles of border.

STOP Liberal Republicans from Blocking Conservative Bill in Georgia!

ALERT: On Monday, we asked our members to contact a RINO in Georgia, who is blocking a solid conservative bill in the state House of Representatives. This bill -- HR 536, the "Human Life Amendment" bill -- is being blocked by the Speaker of the House from even getting a fair up-or-down vote on the floor of the House.
The problem is, THIS power-hungry legislator isn't a Democrat - he's a Republican!

Our members responded, in a BIG way -- he received over one thousand calls and emails in the last two days, demanding that he do what he was elected to do, and let the people vote!

Now, that bill has finally been given a hearing in the Judiciary Committee... TODAY!

Five-year Amnesty Bill Under Discussion

Some House Democrats are having behind-the-scenes discussions about creating a special visa for illegal aliens they believe will enjoy considerable Republican support. Under the plan, illegal aliens who can prove they have jobs, pay a fine, and pass a criminal background check will receive the gift of legal status for 5 years. The plan is designed to attract pro-business Republicans and those who backed the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill by also increasing the number of visas issued for technical, temporary and agricultural workers.

Their plan appears to be to create a bi-partisan alternative to the bi-partisan SAVE Act (Secure America with Verification Enforcement), which focuses on reducing illegal immigration instead of rewarding it.

The Berkeley city council has made national news by telling Marine Corps recruiters that they are unwelcome in that bastion of the academic left.

It is a shame that Berkeley is not on some island in the South Pacific, because then they could be given their independence and left to defend themselves.

As it is, members of our armed forces who put their lives on the line to defend America are also defending people like too many in Berkeley for whom the very word America, and the American flag, bring only sneers.

Even longtime Clinton ally James Carville is acknowledging that Hillary is in trouble, saying that if she loses the March 4 primary in either Texas or Ohio, her campaign is doomed.

Speaking at the International Builders Show in Florida on Wednesday, Carville — a top adviser to Bill Clinton in the 1990s — declared:

“She’s behind. Make no mistake. If she loses either Texas or Ohio, this thing is done.”

Happy Saint Valentine's Day, February 14, 2008

There are several theories about the origin of Valentine's Day celebrations. Some believe the Romans had a mid-February custom where boys drew girls' names in honor of the sex and fertility goddess, Februata Juno; pastors "baptised" this holiday, like some others, by substituting the names of saints such as Valentine to suppress the practice. Others maintain that the custom of sending Valentines on 14 February stems from the belief that birds begin to pair on that date. By 1477 the English associated lovers with the feast of Valentine because on that day "every bird chooses him a mate." The custom started of men and women writing love letters to their Valentine on this day. Other "romance" traditions have become attached to this feast, including pinning bay leaves to your pillow on Valentine's Eve so that you will see your future mate that night in your dreams.
